Just Desserts

I don’t know… when I drew this it was very satisfying. Although Fang isn’t exactly getting much of a comeuppance from Zedwig here, I could feel at least a tinge of the liberation Zedwig is experiencing at even the thought of being free from Fangline. It’s making him so giddy he’s about to jump on the crazy train, if he hasn’t already.

Three days until Nano, everybody! Turn on the sirens and get your outlines cranking! Meanwhile, join the Lint addicts discussion on the NaNo forums to tell us about your plot… so we can steal it. And that’s the royal “we”.

Speaking of nothing, I got a very informative letter from a certain intelligent reader this past week regarding Xylic yelling “Fire!” on last Friday’s page:

I’m not sure if you’ve done the same thing in the past, but one does not “fire” an arrow. Fire assumes there is propulsion behind the projectile. You fire a gun…but you ‘loose’ an arrow, since what makes an arrow go is the kenetic energy created by pulling the arrow back on the bow string.

I always did love physics/semantics talk. So, you see, technically, “Fire!” is wrong, but to our twenty-first century sensibilities it sounds so right. Now we know, and knowing is half the battle. Thanks, Laura!

By the way, I absolutely adore the color palette with the scenes between these two. I would paint in those colors all day.

Thanks for reading!

Actually, as far as propultion goes, there is little difference between the explosion propelling the bullet and the tension of the string propelling the arrow. One is released chemical potential energy and the other is released physical potential energy. I think the difference when it comes to the word "fire" is that when one sets off a gun, one literally creates fire. The hammer strikes (in old guns, flint struck steel), and creates an explosion within the barrel. I'm thinking that the saying actually goes back to old artillery. At that time, the artillery team was literally calling for a flame with which to light the wick.

I wouldn't worry abolout it though. It conveyed the right meaning to our modern sensibilities. :)

My archery instructor always says "Shoot [at will]". That could work, too, I suppose..

oh i'm pretty sure they did say 'loose'! if you read a lot of fantasy lit, that's what you'll find. i hadn't picked up on it, though. sharp eye!

omg, i love this page so much i am doing jumping jacks! yes - jumping jacks!
  • Okay, maybe the physics doesn't work with "fire", but I have never heard of any archer commander shouting "LOOSE!" Seriously, what do you think the real-life medieval archers' commanders said? "Release" maybe? Does anyone know?

Every time Zedwig and Fangline are on the stage, the story is always incredibly compelling! They dynamics between these two are some of my favourite out of the whole thing, and seeing the power shift is exciting! As things are building, I can't wait to see where Bactine fits into all of this... (In other words, you have an excellent art for getting people to really fall in love with Lint's people, and I am head over heels XD )
    GO ZEDWIG GO.
